LCMSD Exciting News - Return to Full Classes on April 12!!!

Dear LCMSD Community,

We have some exciting news . . .

In January we began our planning for a return to full classes and a longer instructional day. We have relied on science, school and community transmission data, mental health data, and stakeholder interests to guide our decision.

I am writing to you today to confirm that LCMSD will return to full classes on April 12th. Tomorrow, our first goal of providing an opportunity for all in-person staff to be vaccinated will be met. 186 out of our 191 staff/ancillary personnel have decided to be vaccinated. Our second goal regarding parent volunteers during lunch is on track. We have 153 interested and will be sending out a sign-up with days/times in the very near future. If you sign up to volunteer at least one day per week for all eight weeks we will add you to our vaccination list, thus qualifying you to receive a vaccine in the coming weeks.

We held two bargaining sessions with CSEA (classified union) and yesterday we met with LCMEA (certificated/teachers union). We are pleased to announce that a tentative agreement was reached with LCMEA regarding a modified day for elementary and a return to the typical middle school schedule. Below are the school hours.

Schedules Beginning April 12

  • Elementary (Neil Cummins and Cove)
    • Kindergarten: 8:10 - 1:00; lunch on campus
    • 1st - 5th: 8:10 - 2:05; lunch on campus
  • Middle School (Hall)
    • Standard 7 period day; 8:15 - 3:12
    • Early release Wednesday; 8:15 - 2:12
    • Lunch on campus
  • Typical class sizes following MCPH distancing guidelines
  • Distance learning will continue being offered for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year
  • 94% of all LCMSD students will be attending in-person on April 12 (this is up from our current 87%)

Schedules for 2021-22

Unless otherwise directed by the Marin County Department of Public Health (which appears to be highly unlikely), we are planning to continue the full-day middle school schedule at Hall and implement the full-day elementary school schedule at Cove and Neil Cummins on August 18, 2021.

Distance Learning Days

April 1 and 2 will be distance learning days so that teachers and staff can prepare our schools for the full classroom return on April 12. Your child will have a total of 60 minutes each day on Zoom and 180 minutes (120 for Kindergarten) of assignments. Thank you in advance for your support.

Open House

Due to COVID restrictions, we are reimagining open house for this year. Our traditional events have been canceled; however, we will be sending out more detailed information regarding our spin on how students can share their learning with parents. Stay tuned . . .

Thank you Dr. Willis, Dr. Santora, and Mary Jane Burke for your relentless efforts in keeping our schools safe. Your clear framework for reopening, push to get all Marin educators vaccinated, as well as ongoing communication have made Marin County the exemplar in how to keep students and staff safe during these challenging times.

We are so excited for April 12! Thank you Trustees, administrators, staff, teachers, and parents for your dedication to following science and doing what is in the best interest of students.

Take care,

Brett Geithman, Ed.D.

Superintendent
