We are One: Social Justice Lesson #1

Dear LCMSD Community,

On January 22, 2024, we sent you an update on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts in LCMSD. Our work includes a partnership with Tenisha Tate from Critical Friends, which is generously funded by Schools Rule Marin (thank you!!). A significant part of our plan includes age-appropriate monthly social justice lessons in all classrooms. Four lessons will be taught this school year and then beginning in 2024-25, we will have one lesson monthly beginning in August (10 total). These lessons are created to meet the Learning For Justice Social Justice Standards and will cover themes of Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action. We will refer to these lessons as We are One

This morning, our first We are One lesson was taught by teachers in every classroom. This lesson is focused on the Social Justice Standard - Identity #3: The outcome is for students to acknowledge the facets that make up their identity. This first lesson also lays the foundation for why this work is important and provides the ground rules for creating a safe space for discussions. To follow up on this lesson, consider engaging in these discussion prompts with your children at home:

  • Grades 3 - 8 (video link)

    • Was there anyone in the video with whom you share a similar identity or had a common experience with? Who and why?

    • Was there anyone in the video you could relate to even though they have a different identity from you? Who and why?

  • Grades K - 8

    • Did you notice if you stepped into the circle more than once?

    • What were some things you noticed about all the different parts of your identity?

    • What are you most proud of about your identity?

    • Parents, share things about your family and culture that your child may not have learned yet. 

Our commitment is beyond being responsive to incidents within our community. Our goal is to intentionally teach our students how to be proud of who they are, be kind to one another, celebrate our differences, and solve problems collaboratively with care and compassion. These efforts support our sustained commitment to empowering our students to be social justice leaders in high school and beyond.  

The lesson will be available in the Main Office for parents who want to view it.
