E-bike Ordinance May Impact Student Transportation

Dear LCMSD Families,
We want to make you aware of an e-bike ordinance currently under consideration by the Marin County Board of Supervisors that could significantly impact student transportation in our community.
Today, the Board of Supervisors will review a draft e-bike ordinance aligned with Assembly Bill 1778, authored by Assemblymember Damon Connolly. If the Marin County Board of Supervisors supports the draft ordinance during their March 25 meeting, it will be placed on the May 20 consent calendar. If adopted on May 20, the ordinance would go into effect July 1, 2025.
If passed, the ordinance would prohibit individuals under 16 from riding Class 2 e-bikes (those with a throttle and maximum assisted speed of 20 mph).
What this means for our students: The majority of e-bikes currently used by students—specifically Class 2 throttle-powered models—would no longer be permitted if the ordinance is adopted. This may impact how your child travels to and from school next year.
If you have questions or would like to learn more, the March 25 Marin County Board of Supervisors meeting will be live-streamed and archived on the County website.
Thank you,
Dr. Brett GeithmanSuperintendent
