Guest Author Julia McKee, Elementary Art Teacher

The Cove art room is full of color, excitement and lots of creative thinking in the 2023-24 school year! Cove artists this year will be working on a range of exciting projects in a wide variety of mediums that include skills like drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture. Kindergarten has started off the year with the basic building blocks of art: line, shape, color and texture. Each year, in each grade level we will build upon these concepts by creating art in a variety of materials like: paper, clay, plaster, fabric, yarn and lots more.

My hope is that students will have the chance to get their hands on something that will foster a long love of creating! We are all about making artistic choices and pushing ourselves to try something new in art class to continue to grow our skills. As we sometimes get a little messy in art class, I would love your help in ensuring artists feel free to create by making sure your child is not wearing their very favorite outfit on the day they have art. Find out what day your child has art here!

Along with teaching art at The Cove on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, I also teach art at Neil Cummins on Mondays and Fridays. My passion in teaching is for each of my students to feel seen, welcomed and safe to explore their own creative ideas.

Art can mean so many things, and it can also be a great way for kids to have a calm moment in their day. I encourage you to create a space in your schedule at home to create art together. So many wonderful conversations happen when we are focused on something creative!

Thank you for your continued support for SPARK which allows all of our Cove coyotes the gift of art education!

Sincerely,

Ms. McKee
