PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Black Joy Celebration at Cove February is Black History Month and we are embracing this opportunity to celebrate and educate! Teachers are using resources in their classrooms for developmentally appropriate discussions about Black Joy and Black History. Here are some tools for you to use at home.

  • Books We would like to share a lovingly curated book list that offers insight to the Black experience. This collection features books about skin color, self-expression, self-acceptance, excellence, and everyday living while Black. You can check these books out at school or from your local library!

  • We hope that you will join us in broadening your perspective as you explore and celebrate Black culture with your child at home. Books are a vehicle for change. We hope that you will see a reflection of yourself and/or gain greater understanding of those around you through engaging with these stories.

  • Assembles on Agents of Change In Friday’s assembly (2/9), we talked about “agents of change.”  We are defining "agent of change" as someone who has made a difference for an identified group of focus. While there are MANY agents of change worth celebrating for their contributions to the lives of Black people and Black culture, we are highlighting Bellen Woodard and Ruby Bridges. We learned about Bellen on Friday, 2/9. We will learn more about Ruby Bridges in the assembly on 2/16. We invite you to join us as we learn about Bellen Woodard and Ruby Bridges and the impact they made…all because they decided to be brave.  You can use these questions to reflect about our chosen agent of change OR to learn more about another change maker!

SCHOOL & PTO UPDATES

Valentine’s Day Celebrations at Cove Many classes will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in the classroom this week. As always, we ask that you please work with your child’s teacher around what food (if any) is acceptable for any classroom celebrations.  Students are welcome to bring Valentines cards with pencils, colorful erasers, stickers, tattoos, etc. If they bring a Valentine for any student in their class, then they need to bring one for every student in their class.

Ruby Bridges Walk: Friday 2/16 Mark your calendar to walk to school and show support for ending racism and bullying. Meet at the corner of Spindrift and Seawolf at 7:45am to walk to school as a community. There will be purple beanies, purple bracelets and purple buttons for your backpack. Feel free to wear more purple! We will leave at 7:50am to walk along Spindrift and enter school by the baseball diamond. If you miss the walking train, we will have a table in front of 81 Spindrift (three houses down from the entrance to school) with all the accessories, so you can do a partial walk to school to show your support.

The Cove School Needs Our Help - Cove In Motion! We still are in need of 1-2 parent volunteers to help run Cove In Motion music every Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Duties include arriving at 7:50am to set up the music, DJ music for the duration of Cove In Motion, and put system away. Total time is 40 minutes. Please let mwalker@lcmschools.org know if you can help us to keep Cove in Motion alive!

Extra Change of Clothes Our Coyotes have been busy getting muddy on field trips, wet playing in puddles, and needing changes of clothing at school.  If your student has come home in clothes from the office, please wash and return the loaned garments.  Students are much more comfortable in their own clothing--please send your student to school with a full change of clothes in their backpack (top, bottoms, underwear, socks).  If you have any plain, gently used clothing you'd like to donate, please bring donations to the front office.

Cove's Annual Tinker Day is coming up on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 8:30am-12:30pm.  Held in the gallery and courtyard, it's a tribute to STEAM, with such long-time favorites as the Take-Apart Station, Cardboard Construction Zone, Sewing, and a variety of projects set up and run by parents as well as the larger Cove Community. This amazing day of STEAM allows our students to Tinker in a creative, constructive way. Sign up here to run a station or volunteer to help our Tinkers at Work.

Please begin collecting cardboard boxes and tape (scotch and electric) for our Construction Station as well as any old electronics (all shapes and sizes!) for the Take-Apart Station. We ask that you bring them into the gallery on March 19 or the morning of Tinker Day, March 20. Tinker Day Questions? Email Jessica Swanson at jessica.louise.garrett@gmail.com
