6th GRADE WHEEL INFORMATION
All 6th grade students will also take the following courses in the 6th grade “Wheel” for 6 weeks each. The Wheel provides students with exposure to year-long electives that are available in 7th and 8th grade. The courses in the 6th Grade wheel are still being determined, but may include some of the following courses:
- Studio Art: In this course, students will have the opportunity to have an introduction to develop their technical skills as well as their personal style of making art through in-depth projects. They will learn how to create art using a wide range of materials, techniques, and processes, including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture.
- Maker Ed:This 6th grade wheel course, introduces students to the engineering and design process using a collaborative model. Students are challenged to design (research when appropriate), build, test, improve (retest) their projects using a selection of teacher-assigned projects/challenges and student-generated ideas for projects.Each class will explore introductory group challenges as well as a unique project aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and the Project Lead the Way course-Design and Modeling.
- Musical Theater: In this course, students work on the basic crafts of acting, singing, dancing and working in an ensemble. The importance of self-discipline, teamwork, personal responsibility and personal expression are stressed. Students are introduced to basic acting techniques and musical theater production concepts. In class performances are expected.
- Student Success In this course, students will engage in a variety of strategies for overall student success. This includes executive functioning skills such as time management, organization, and use of tools for planning. There will be a focus on wellness, cyber safety and time for yoga on Fridays.
- Photography In this course, students will have a beginning experience in photography, focusing on the basics of composition, light and basic editing. Students will have the opportunity to photograph both inside and outside of the classroom.
