2023-24 TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN/ KINDERGARTEN ELIGIBILITY
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat are the birthdates for Transitional Kindergarten?
Transitional Kindergarten will not be offered for the 2023-24 school year. Registrations are currently not being accepted.
What are the birthdates for Kindergarten?
Students turning 5 years old on or before September 1, 2023 are eligible for Kindergarten.
My child is Kindergarten eligible for the 2023-24 school year. I am deciding to hold him/her back and enroll in Kindergarten in 2024; can parents make this decision?Children eligible for Kindergarten are not required to enroll, as Kindergarten is not mandatory. However, your decision to not enroll your child at five-years-old will result in your child being six-years-old the following year and he/she will be placed in first grade per Education Code. See next question.
My child turns 6 on or before September 1, 2023. I decided to hold him/her back and enroll in Kindergarten. Can’t parents just make this decision? No, it is a school-based decision with parent input. This is not an LCMSD rule, but rather Education Code that we must follow. Since school is mandatory for six-year-old students, parents and guardians must enroll their children in school once they reach the age of six (EC Section 48200). It is a local decision, with parental input, whether the six-year-old student will be enrolled in Kindergarten or first grade. For first grade enrollment, California law requires a child to be six years old on or before September 1 for the 2014-15 school year and each school year thereafter to be legally eligible for first grade (EC Section 48010).
Are class sizes going up in Kindergarten next year?
No. Our goal is to remain at an average of 24 students per classroom.
Does the District accept Interdistrict Transfer Requests?
If space permits. Some years we had to turn down a number of Interdistrict Transfer Requests. Go to your district of residence to begin this process.
