• The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is a comprehensive, youth risk behavior and resilience data collection service available to all California local education agencies, and is funded by the California Department of Education. It is given biennially to students in fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh grade.

Every school district in California is required to conduct the survey in order to comply with the Every Student Succeeds Act, Title IV. The CHKS provides local schools and communities with data to identify the needs of youth (grades 5 and above) and to guide efforts to meet those needs.

    The CHKS addresses:

    • Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use
    • School safety, harassment, and violence
    • Nutrition and physical health
    • Youth resilience and developmental supports
    • School-connectedness, truancy, and self-reported grades

The Healthy Kids Survey provides valuable information about school and district progress towards LCAP goals for school connectedness and safety. The district counseling department uses CHKS data to inform counseling services and programs.
